CALM Studies
TCU’s Contemplative Studies initiative was started by Professor Andy Fort in 2012 and Mark Dennis took over as director in January 2017 after his retirement. In early 2021, the group was renamed CALM, which gestures toward the sense of calm one derives from a sustained meditation practice but is also an acronym, meaning “Compassionate Awareness and Living Mindfully.”
The Mindfulness Movement & The Science of Meditation
Simply put, mindfulness is the practice of actively cultivating awareness of one’s mental, emotional, and physical environments. Major companies like Aetna, Google, Zappos, and others have embraced these practices to help employees deal with stress, increase work-life satisfaction, and become more effective at their jobs, whether they work as managers, engineers, or in other positions.
